When seeking a better form of martial arts training you may find styles that are unique and you can't find them anywhere in your town or city! My best piece of advice is investing in your education with self defense books!
I myself have written some self defense books, but I highly recommend you read from authors that are the masters of their chosen combat style. As a kid I read alot of Ninjutsu books and still do, but my library ranges from zen buddhism, to death strikes.
There are great books and magazines out there. I recommend the Tao Of Jeetkunedo by Bruce Lee as well as Blackbelt Magazine. Educating your self with self defense books and training in DVD's or investing in equipment is always a good choice.
Simply because you are staying active and afloat of what works in a life or death encounter on the streets, or how to outsmart your opponent in a martial arts competition. I recommend you look into the different styles and build a martial arts collection so you can draw from different sources.
Have a broad education in different martial arts techniques and self defense books is always a good idea. If you can blend a boxing drill mixed with Judo that is a good idea! The key point I am suggesting is incorporating different types of styles and martial arts techniques into your arsenal.
I also always recommend that you practice martial arts in the dojo as well. As long as they are good martial arts systems actually designed for application on the street, or something that would work on the streets.
Styles like Aikido and Taekwondo are just two examples of bad martial arts to bring onto the streets. Remember the stuff you see in the movies is fake too and won't work in a real life or death battle.
